WA FLUTE COMPETITION

Sponsored by

Was streamed Sunday 3rd May 2020

Thankyou to all our entrants and to everyone behind the scenes who made this year's event such a great success. Individual performance reports from our adjudicators Andrew Freeman and Andrew Nicholson were sent out via email Thursday morning 7 May so please check your email.

Coronavirus Update

We are NOT cancelling the event, we are changing the style to a virtual competition to be able to continue with performing through these restrictive times. The competition will still be held on Sunday 3 rd May 2020, though instead of being performed live at the UWA Music Department, the videos you send in of your performances will be streamed through a real time “invitation only” internet channel.

Unfortunately the 13yo and under Ensemble and 18yo and under Ensembles sections are unable to run, though all the other sections will be open to enter.

Competitors will still need to perform the same pieces / excerpts as if it were performed in an auditorium, though for the accompanied piece, instead of performing with a piano accompanist, you will be emailed a WAV file recording of your accompaniment to perform along with at your own specified tempo markings.

All performers will record a video of themselves playing their chosen program / excerpts within the time limit in one take and send a link to the organisers by Wednesday 29 th April 2020. You will still have to register and music emailed by Wednesday 8 th April 2020 and your accompaniment / excerpts will be sent Monday 20th April 2020 (sections A, B and C) and Wednesday 22nd April for sections D and E. It is preferred if you can use a phone / tablet device for the video recording. Instructions for how to send all files and watch the competition will be provided.

At the end of the day on Sunday 3 rd May 2020, Andrew Nicholson will appear on the live stream and comment on the performances for the day as well as announce prize winners. Prizes will be sent to each winner the following day.

Of course, it would be ideal to perform at UWA on Sunday 3 rd May 2020 with your accompanist in front of an audience, though unfortunately due to coronavirus precautions, this is not possible, so we are looking at the next best possible option.

Some pros include:

  • The prizes are amazing!

  • The opportunity to practice with the accompaniment track as much as you like from the 20th to 29th April2020

  • You can record as many videos as you like and choose your best one

  • If you suffer from performance anxiety, you will have no audience to distract you

  • Friends and family from around the world can be invited to watch the live competition stream

  • Everyone will be provided with a performance report

  • Something to focus on and work towards during this period of social isolation

Entry submission

Due to the complexity of tempo changes and ensemble preparation required for some pieces (especially romantic, 20th century and contemporary), it is highly recommended that you choose an accompanied piece that will be relatively easy for the accompanist to record for you to follow. All accompaniment parts must be emailed with all your advised tempo markings for the accompanist to record to your instructions.

Important Dates
  • 8 April 2020: Entries close and accompaniment parts must be submitted

  • 20 April 2020: Accompaniment audio recordings for sections A, B and C sent

  • 22 April 2020: Accompaniment audio recordings for sections D and E sent

  • 29 April 2020: All video submissions to be received

  • 1 May 2020: Program with schedule sent out

  • 3 May 2020: Livestream broadcast of 2020 WA Flute Competition
